"The Shelling of Carlisle - July 1-2,
1863" by

Edition Prints
On July 1- 2nd, 1863, the town of Carlisle "stood
tall" against an overwhelming Confederate
force.
With the capital of Harrisburg in their sights
and invading Confederate forces threatening many
of the towns surrounding the capital - Carlisle
was no exception. On the fateful night of July
1-2nd, as Confederates moved toward Harrisburg,
the residents of Carlisle were confronted by a
Confederate force of 2,800 cavalry and six guns
under the command of the legendary General J.E.B.
Stuart.
Fortunately (as it turned out) the Union General
William "Baldy" Smith was now garrisoned
in Carlisle and chose to resist Stuart's call
for surrender. With residents ducking for cover
and a defiant Smith determined not to leave or
relinquish the town, Stuart's only option was
to shell the town. In the end Carlisle gallantly
withstood the barrage and "history"
turned Stuart's attention toward Gettysburg.
The unsuccessful raid by General J. E.B. Stuart
is often overshadowed by the famous battle that
took place days later at nearby Gettysburg. None
the less the events at Carlisle were one of the
high points of Pennsylvania's Civil War History.
Not only did Carlisle refuse the Confederates
calls for surrender once, but it did so repeatedly,
as shells from Stuart's famed Horse Artillery
rained down.
It was indeed one of Carlisle's finest hours.
"..... with
almost photographic realism (Lesser) invites
the viewer to join him in a momentous historic
adventure."
- Gerard
McCarthy, curator of modern and contemporary
art and a frequent contributor to "Art
in America" magazine

The original oil painting, over three feet in
length, depicts Confederate General J.E.B Stuart
receiving orders from General Robert E. Lee to
report to Gettysburg delivered by Major Andrew
Reid Venable around 1:00 in the morning. In the
background, the cannon fire of Capt. James Breathed's
1st Stuart Horse Artillery set Carlisle ablaze
under the light of a full moon...
