Today,
amidst the gently rolling hills of southern Washington County, all
is peaceful. A significant piece of vernacular architecture stands
among the hills, steeped in American history, offering a unique
opportunity to those who want to linger at the Antietam National
Battlefield. The
mid 19th century log and frame farm house has three bedrooms,
each with a private bath, and decorated in comfortable period antiques.
Confederate
General James Longstreet used the Piper House as a battlefield headquarters
during the bloodiest single day of the American Civil War, on September
17, 1862. Following the battle, the Piper House and barn were used
as a field hospital where wounded soldiers, both Confederate and
Union, were treated. |
